Ultrasound

What is Ultrasound Imaging?

Ultrasound imaging, is a noninvasive examination used to diagnose various medical conditions. It uses sounds waves to produce pictures of the structures inside the body. No imaging radiation (x-ray) is needed. Because ultrasound is a real-time examination, it can show movement within the body and blood flow within the blood vessels.

A Doppler ultrasound study may be part of an ultrasound examination. Doppler ultrasound is a special technique that evaluates blood velocity as it flows through the blood vessels, including the body’s major arteries and veins in the abdomen, arms, legs and neck.

What happens during Ultrasound Imaging?

For most ultrasound exams, the patient is positioned lying on their back on an examination table that can be tilted or moved. A clear, water-based gel is applied to the area of the body being studied to help the transducer make secure contact with the body and eliminate air pockets between the transducer and the skin.
Most ultrasound examinations are completed within 30 minutes to an hour.
